Sad day in football as Super Eagles’ star loses team mate in fatal bus crash

Super Eagles’ star, Joel Obi has lost his club team mate to a fatal car crash on Sunday night. Czech Republic international Josef Sural was killed after a minibus carrying players from Turkish top tier club Aytemiz Alanyaspor crashed while returning from an away match, the club confirmed on Monday.

Sural sustained fractures to his head and some parts of his body and was immediately taken to intensive care, but he was pronounced dead after doctors attempted to save his life. Sural died at the hospital where he and six of his teammates were taken after the crash, the club said on Twitter.

Seven Alanyaspor players had rented a VIP minibus to return from the club’s 1-1 draw against Kayserispor on Sunday and the bus crashed some 5 km (3.1 miles) from the southern coastal town of Alanya, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency said.

The Sun reports that six other members of the Alanyaspor squad were taken to hospital after the horrific crash, including ex-Liverpool and Sunderland forward Djibril Cisse. Super Eagles’ star, Joel Obi is on loan from Italian Serie A side Chievo was not reported to be involved in the crash.

The rest of the club’s players and staff had returned with the team bus or on their own, Anadolu said, adding that the driver of the VIP bus had been taken into police custody following the accident and an investigation had been launched.

Alanyaspor club chairman Hasan Cavusoglu was quoted as saying the driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel of the minibus. A second driver was asleep at the time.
