Speech-impaired jailed six months for stealing in Osun

AN Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo has sentenced a 22-year-old deaf and dumb, Muraina Sodiq to 6months imprisonment for stealing motor battery and welding engine.

The convict was arraigned on March 17, 2020, for offense bothering on burglary and stealing.

The charge was read to Muriana with the aid of an interpreter who communicated his charge to him with signs and symbols.

The prosecutor, Mr. Olayiwola Rasak told the court that Muraina Sodiq committed the offence on March 15, 2020, at 7 AM, at Ona Babaona, Oke Baale area, Osogbo.

He said, “Muraina break into a shop of one Rafiu Haruna to steal one Welding Engine value #45,000 and one motor vehicle battery valued #18,000 total values of properties stolen #63,000 properties.

He noted that the offence committed contravene section 413 and 390(9) of Criminal code Cap 34 Vol. Il Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

Muraina pleaded guilty to the two-count charge preferred against him.

The prosecutor adopted the charge sheet as fact and tender the motor vehicle battery and welding engine he stole as an exhibit.

While the defence counsel, Mr. Nagite Okobe was giving the allocutus on behalf of his client, he urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

He said, “ the convict didn’t waste the time of the court and his even remorseful of his action. He is young and purely one of the disadvantaged people in the world. I am not saying that because of his disability he can commit a crime but I want the court to see to his plight.
